Hahoe Village in Andong is a clan village of the Pungsan Yu family, a Joseon-period village of the yangban (scholar-official) class that has well preserved its outstanding natural scenery together with its folk and Confucian traditions. This building was built by Seoae Yu Seong-ryong (1542–1607) when he returned to his hometown after the death of his father, and it was also a place where he recuperated when he fell ill. It is said to have been built in 1573, the sixth year of King Seonjo of Joseon; the jeongsa (study retreat) and pavilion stand facing the river, to the north of Bukchon. The jeongsa is three bays across the front and one-and-a-half bays deep, with a matbae (gable) roof that, seen from the side, forms the shape of the character 人 (person). The end bay on the left holds a daecheong (wooden-floored hall), and the remaining two bays are ondol (heated) rooms. A half-bay toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda) was installed at the front. The pavilion, called Yeonjwaru, measures two bays by two bays, with a paljak (hipped-and-gabled) roof that, seen from the side, resembles the shape of the character 八 (eight). A railing surrounds the raised wooden floor of the pavilion on all four sides, commanding a view of the pine forest along the riverbank and, across the river, Buyongdae and the area around Ogyeonjeongsa (a National Folklore Heritage). It is a historic place, a villa frequently used by Yu Seong-ryong after he retired from office and lived in seclusion. This heritage site is usually open to the public, but access may be restricted for personal reasons such as those of the owner.
