Hahoe Village in Andong is a clan village of the Pungsan Yu family, a yangban village of the Joseon period that has well preserved its outstanding natural scenery together with its folk and Confucian traditions. This building was used as a study by Gyeomam Yu Un-ryong (1539–1601), a disciple of Toegye and a former magistrate of Wonju. It is said to have been built around 1583, the sixteenth year of King Seonjo, and stands in the north-west of Bukchon in Hahoe Village, at a spot commanding a view of Gyeomamjeongsa and Buyongdae. The house is said to take its name from 'Binyeon', a deep pool at the foot of the Buyongdae cliff. It has a floor plan of three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a paljak, hipped-and-gabled, roof shaped like the character 八 when seen from the side. On the left is an ondol room of one bay across the front and two bays to the side, and the rest is a daecheong, wooden-floored hall. The front two bays of the daecheong have no doors fitted, while panelled doors are fitted at the sides and rear. Standing amid outstanding surrounding scenery and landscaping, this is a house where one can feel a rich and pleasant atmosphere. ※ This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at certain times for reasons particular to the owner.
