Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHahoe Village in Andong is a clan village of the Pungsan Yu family, a yangban village of the Joseon period that has well preserved its outstanding natural scenery together with its folk and Confucian traditions. Because Jakcheon Yu Do-gwan lived in this house, it is also called Jakcheon Gotaek, and it stands close to the riverside at the western end of Bukchon in Hahoe Village. The exact date of construction is unknown, but judging from its building techniques and style it is presumed to date from the mid-Joseon period. Originally there were two buildings, but only one survives today, the other having been lost to a flood in 1934. The anchae, main quarters, is five bays across the front and one-and-a-half bays to the side; from the left it comprises a kitchen of one-and-a-half bays, an anbang of one bay, a daecheong of one bay, and a geonneonbang of one bay. This can be seen as a typical four-bay ㅡ-shaped house of the southern region, but the sarangbang, men's room, has been opened up, giving variation to the layout. One point worth noting is that, although the house is small, a wall was placed at the front to separate the anchae from the sarangbang. This can be said to express naeoe, the Confucian idea of separating men's and women's spaces, which normally kept the anchae and sarangbang apart, and it stands as valuable evidence of how, with minimal means, a resourceful change was made that was not inferior to those found in much larger yangban houses. At the time of designation it was named 'Hahoe Yu Si-ju House', but since the current owner's great-grandfather, Yu Do-gwan, moved to this village from Jakcheon-ri in Mungyeong, and the house had come to be known as Jakcheondaek, the designated name was changed on 29 January 2007 to 'Hahoe Jakcheondaek'. Subsequently, on 28 February 2017, under the 'Rational Adjustment of Designated Names for Important Folklore Cultural Heritage', the naming principle of 'location, village name, pen name, gotaek' set out in the naming guidelines was applied, and the name was changed to its current form, Jakcheon House in Hahoe, Andong. ※ This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at certain times for reasons particular to the owner.
