Andong Hahoe Village is a clan village of the Pungsan Yu clan, a Joseon-period village of the yangban gentry that has well preserved its outstanding natural scenery and its folk and Confucian traditions. This house was built by Seoae Yu Seong-ryong (1542–1607) for scholarly study and to train his disciples. It was built in 1586, the 19th year of King Seonjo of Joseon, and stands on the riverside east of Buyongdae Cliff in Hahoe Village. It largely consists of an outer gate quarters, a main house, a detached annex and a men's quarters, each standing apart to form a straight, single-row plan. The outer gate quarters measures six bays across the front and one bay to the side, and comprises a privy and storerooms. Passing through the gate is the main house, which measures four bays across the front and two bays to the side. It has an unusual layout for a yangban house, with the kitchen placed in the centre of its straight, single-row plan and rooms arranged on either side. The detached annex stands directly behind the main house and measures three bays across the front and two bays to the side. It is the smallest building of the complex, containing a heated room (ondol) and a two-bay wooden-floored hall. It is said that Yu Seong-ryong wrote the Jingbirok (a National Treasure) here. The men's quarters measures four bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a two-bay wooden-floored hall at its centre flanked by one room on each side, and a wooden veranda running around it. Although it is a yangban house, it is distinctive for following the local commoner house type known as a "dotomari house" (named after a weaving-loom bobbin), with the kitchen placed centrally and rooms on either side; it is highly valued for its topography, fitting for a jeongsa (a scholar's retreat for study), and as the historic place where the Jingbirok was written. This heritage site is usually open to the public, but viewing may be restricted for private reasons at the discretion of the owner.
