Andong Hahoe Village is a clan village of the Pungsan Yu clan, a Joseon-period yangban village that has well preserved its outstanding natural scenery and its folk and Confucian traditions. This house was built by Gyeomam Yu Un-ryong (1539–1601), the eldest brother of Seoae Yu Seong-ryong (1542–1607), for scholarly study and to teach his disciples. It is said to have been built in 1567, the 22nd year of King Myeongjong of Joseon, and stands atop a high cliff to the west of Buyongdae. The jeongsa, or men's quarters, a scholar's retreat, occupies the upper part of the southern cliff overlooking Hahoe Village, with the main house set behind it. The jeongsa is a two-storey pavilion-style building measuring four bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a four-bay wooden-floored hall at its centre and rooms to either side. A narrow wooden veranda runs in front of the rooms, and the signboard reading "Gyeomamjeong" is said to be written in the hand of his teacher, Yi Hwang. The main house has an L-shaped plan, with a two-bay kitchen and a two-bay main room to the left of the wooden-floored hall, and a two-bay side room to the right; wooden verandas were set in front of the main room and side room. A thatched storehouse stands to the left of the main house. This is a place where the winding river beneath the high cliff and the surrounding nature combine in striking scenery, and it is valued as precious material embodying both the topography befitting a jeongsa and its long tradition. This heritage site is open to viewing only on a limited basis, and visitors should check in advance whether viewing is possible.
