Yeomhaengdang House in Hahoe, Andong
안동 하회마을 염행당 고택 · 安東 河回마을 念行堂 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAndong Hahoe Village is a clan village of the Pungsan Yu clan, a Joseon-period yangban village that has well preserved its outstanding natural scenery and its folk and Confucian traditions. Among its houses, Yeomhaengdang House in Hahoe, together with Chunghyodang House (a Treasure), is one of the representative houses of Namchon, the southern part of Hahoe, and stands at its centre. It was built in 1797, the 21st year of King Jeongjo of Joseon, by Yu Gi-yeong, who held the post of jwarang in the Ministry of Justice, and originally comprised an outer gate quarters, a main building, a shrine, a detached annex and a pavilion. However, the main building and pavilion were destroyed by fire in 1953; the detached annex is now used as the main living space, and the pavilion has since been restored. Passing through the gate, the site of the former main building lies ahead. To the left stands the restored pavilion, and behind the site of the main building, within a separately built wall, stands the shrine. The detached annex is located to the right of the shrine. The outer gate quarters, measuring seven bays across the front and one bay to the side, has six bays either side of the central gate used as storerooms. The shrine measures three bays across the front and one bay to the side and is enclosed by a wall. The detached annex measures four bays across the front and one bay to the side, comprising one bay for the kitchen, two bays for rooms, and one bay for a wooden-floored room. A small pond and flowering plants in the front yard of the detached annex give the house an added touch of charm. As one of the representative houses of Namchon in Hahoe Village, it remains valuable material for study, even though it lost its original appearance in the fire. This heritage site is usually open to the public, but viewing may be restricted for private reasons at the discretion of the owner.
