Andong Hahoe Village is a clan village of the Pungsan Yu clan, a Joseon-period yangban village that has well preserved its outstanding natural scenery and its folk and Confucian traditions. This house was built when Yu Man-ha, grandson of Seoae Yu Seong-ryong (1542–1607), set up a separate household on leaving Chunghyodang House (a Treasure). It is said to have later been extended by Yu Man-ha's son, Juilje Yu Hu-jang, and the house takes its name from Yu Seong-ryong's own pen name. It stands in the lane behind Chunghyodang in Namchon, Hahoe Village, and comprises an outer gate quarters, a men's quarters, a main house, a storehouse and a shrine. Entering through a gap in the wall that runs along the lane, one finds the men's quarters and outer gate quarters; passing into the inner courtyard, the storehouse lies to the left and the main house ahead. The gates and walls combine to form roughly a square plan, and the skilful use of the walls is a distinctive feature of this house. The men's quarters, called Juilje, measures four bays across the front and one bay to the side, with two sarang rooms and a two-bay wooden-floored hall; the outer gate quarters adjoins it. The outer gate quarters, measuring four bays across the front and one bay to the side, consists of one bay for the gate, one bay for a small sarang room, and one bay for the cooking-fire recess. The main house measures six bays across the front and two bays to the side, arranged from left to right as kitchen, main room, wooden-floored hall and side room. The side room is further divided into upper and lower sections, distinguished as the upper and lower sangbang, thought to reflect a deliberate distinction between higher and lower space. The storehouse measures three bays across the front and one bay to the side, and the separately built shrine measures one bay. With well-judged variation in its layout and a distinctive treatment of its walls unlike other houses, this Joseon-period yangban house is valuable material for study.
