Local Personnel Clerk’s House in Naganeupseong Walled Town, Suncheon
순천 낙안읍성 이방댁 · 順天 樂安邑城 吏房宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was the local clerk's house, neighbouring the site of the old prison within Naganeupseong, and it is also the most elaborately styled of the houses within the walled town. It is a house facing south-southwest, with the anchae (main quarters) and araechae (lower quarters) arranged in an L (ㄱ) shape. Entering the main gate leads directly into the courtyard, with the anchae to the right and the araechae opposite. The anchae is arranged in the order of kitchen, main room (anbang), inner wooden-floored hall (anmaru) and side room (geonneobang). The spacing between the pillars of the rooms and the anmaru follows the width commonly used in the Joseon period, whereas the kitchen bay was made comparatively wide. In front of the rooms and the anmaru is a small, open toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda). The araechae consists of a storehouse and a barn, though part of it has been altered. It is the size of a house that, in the Joseon period, was called a 'chogasamgan', a small three-bay thatched house. This heritage site is usually open to the public, but access may be restricted for personal reasons such as those of the owner.
