L-shaped House in Naganeupseong Walled Town, Suncheon
순천 낙안읍성 ㄱ자집 · 順天 樂安邑城 ㄱ字집

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house stands along the road by the east gate of Naganeupseong Walled Town, where there are many shops large and small, and among them it retains relatively much of its old appearance. Entering the main gate beside the shop that faces the main road and turning right leads to the anchae (main quarters). The anchae is arranged in the order of kitchen, room and shed, and turns in an L (ㄱ) shape to place a further small room connecting it to the shop. Overall forming an L-shaped plan, this house is of a form rarely seen in this village. The kitchen hearth, built against the wall shared with the room, is arranged so that smoke escapes through a chimney — an arrangement commonly seen in the southern regions. Likewise, the jangdokdae (platform for storage jars) in front of the kitchen is enclosed by a thickly built low wall, a sight commonly seen both in the southern coastal region and in many houses within the walled town. It originally had a tiled roof, which has since been replaced with slate. The house is valuable both as a shop that retains its old appearance and for its L-shaped plan, which is rare in the Naganeupseong area. This heritage site is usually open to the public, but access may be restricted for personal reasons such as those of the owner.
