Tavern House in Naganeupseong Walled Town, Suncheon
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is the first thatched-roof house facing the main street that runs from the middle of the south gate of Naganeupseong Walled Town. No wall was built around it; the open gap left instead serves as the gateway, and just inside on the left stands a house built in the shape of the character 田 ("field"). It is the only house of this 田-shaped plan within the walled town, thought to have been adopted because the plot of land was so narrow. Consisting of two rooms, a shop and a kitchen, the house has a room in the first bay of the entrance passage and a kitchen in the next bay. Behind the rooms is a wooden-floored room that was used as the shop, next to which is the main room. Each room is opened to the front by a narrow wooden veranda (toenmaru). The walls are of earth, but the wall beside the kitchen is built of stone. A long plank is fixed near the top of the wall so that objects can be placed on it, making good use of the limited space in this small house. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but viewing may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or other private reasons.
