House by the West Gate in Naganeupseong Walled Town, Suncheon
순천 낙안읍성 서문성벽집 · 順天 樂安邑城 西門城壁집

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis thatched-roof house stands in an alley that curves to the right just past the former site of Naganeupseong's west gate. Immediately inside the gate is a courtyard, and since its eastern end is closed off by the fortress wall itself, no separate wall was built there. To the north of the courtyard stands the main house, built as a single straight (一-shaped) range. From left to right it is arranged as kitchen, main room, wooden-floored hall and upper room. A narrow wooden veranda (toenmaru) runs along the front, and on the main-room side a veranda was also added at the rear. The kitchen was enlarged both to the front and the rear to form a large space. The cooking stove is set into the wall on the main-room side, and beside it a plank partition was fitted with a cupboard-like door above, used in the same way as a cabinet. Beside the upper room is a shed, part of which, built of rammed earth, appears to have been added later. To the right of the main gate stands an outbuilding comprising a pigsty, a shed and a toilet. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but viewing may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or other private reasons.
