Local Clerk’s House in Naganeupseong Walled Town, Suncheon
순천 낙안읍성 향리댁 · 順天 樂安邑城 鄕吏宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis thatched house stands to the south-west of the south gate of Naganeupseong, with the fortress wall in front and a road behind. It was considered the most elegant and soundly built thatched house within the walled town, and is said to have been the home of a hyangni, a local government clerk. The anchae (main house), directly opposite the main gate, is a straight ("il"-shaped) building with a kitchen, a room, a storage room and a geonneonbang (side room) arranged in a row. A toenmaru, a narrow wooden veranda, runs along the front, and there is another toenmaru to the right of the side room. The toekan, an extension bay behind the main room and the storage room, however, has a bare earthen floor rather than wooden flooring, and was used for storage — evidence that the household's income, for example from harvests, was considerable. The rooms have earthen walls, whereas the storage room has plank walls fitted with a door. The jangdokdae, a platform for storage jars of sauces and pastes, stands in front of the kitchen, and the toilet is in the corner beside the main gate.
