These are the clothes of Hong Jin-jong (1649–1702), a civil official of the Joseon period, excavated in 1968 from Osan-eup, Gyeonggi-do. Hong Jin-jong passed the jinsa licentiate examination in 1677, the third year of King Sukjong, and served as magistrate of Pyeonggang. The excavated relics include eight jungchimak (a type of overcoat), two sochangui (a lighter overcoat), one simui (a Confucian scholar's robe), one dapho, and three pairs of trousers, described below. The changui was worn for everyday outings, or as an inner layer beneath the jungchimak; it is made of myeongju silk quilted thinly with cotton wadding, has no mu (side gusset panels), and is open from the armpit down. The jungchimak, a type of changui worn by scholar-officials either beneath official robes or as everyday outerwear, resembles today's durumagi overcoat, but has no dongjeong (collar-trim), and has long, wide sleeves with openings at the sides. It is quilted with cotton wadding over myeongju silk, has a half-moon collar, and comes to a point at the hem; the sleeves are long and rounded, and are notable for being narrow. The simui, worn by Confucian scholars of the Joseon period, is a wide-sleeved robe trimmed with black bands along the collar, cuffs and hem. This is the oldest surviving example of its kind, and even the sash (dae) worn around the waist has been preserved. The dapho is a quilted garment whose back is about 30 cm shorter than its front; in general a dapho is a long, sleeveless garment without mu or seop, with the back seam open from below the waist. The trousers include a pair made entirely of myeongju silk, both outer layer and lining, quilted at 1.5 cm intervals with a thin layer of cotton wadding; a winter pair of myeongju silk quilted at 6 cm intervals with a thick layer of wadding; and a pair made of quilted cotton cloth. These relics retain the forms of the seventeenth century intact, making them important material for the study of the costume of that period.
