Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHahoe Village is a clan village of the Pungsan Yu family, said to have flourished from the generation of the brothers Yu Un-ryong and Yu Seong-ryong. A branch of the Nakdonggang River winds in an S-shape around the village's east, south and west sides, giving it a distinctive topography and outstanding natural scenery. Before the Yu clan formed a single-lineage village here, it is presumed that the Heo and An clans, among others, mainly lived in the area. Famous for its own tradition of Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori, a mask dance performed as part of a village exorcism ritual, the village can broadly be divided into a southern hamlet and a northern hamlet, and it preserves many venerable and substantial pieces of heritage. In particular, the masks used in the byeolsingut ritual are designated a national treasure, and are presumed to date from the Goryeo period, suggesting how deep-rooted the village's history is. Many buildings that can be considered representative houses — Yangjindang (Treasure), Chunghyodang (Treasure), Hwagyeongdang Historic House (National Folklore Heritage), Yeomhaengdang Historic House (National Folklore Heritage), Ogyeonjeongsa (National Folklore Heritage) and Gyeomamjeongsa (National Folklore Heritage) — also provide valuable material for studying the life of the Joseon-period scholar-official class and its advanced house structures. With its matchlessly graceful scenery and its well-preserved folk customs and Confucian traditions, this village occupies an important place in the research, preservation and development of Korea's spiritual culture. ※ The above heritage is generally open to visitors, but viewing may be restricted for personal reasons such as those of the owner.
