KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is the birthplace of General Eo Jae-yeon (1823–1871), a military official under Emperor Gojong who died in battle against the warship commanded by the American Admiral Rodgers at Gwangseongjin. It is a thatched house presumed to have been built in the early 1800s. With a broad yard in front, the outer hall, the main hall and the storehouse are joined together to form a quadrangular (ㅁ-shaped) layout. Entering through the main gate beside the storehouse, a low wall extends to the front right, so that the inner courtyard where the main hall stands cannot be clearly seen; an opening in part of this wall serves as the entrance to the main hall. The main hall has an L-shaped layout comprising a kitchen, main bedroom, daecheong and side room, with no separate kitchen storeroom or small side room set apart. It is a simple structure with no veranda in front of the rooms. The straight (一-shaped) outer hall, to the left of the main gate, consists of a kitchen, daecheong and sarangbang. The daecheong is closed off on the side facing the inner courtyard, and open towards the outer yard and the east wall. The outer kitchen can only be entered from the inner courtyard. A large earthen wall, curving broadly to the rear from the back corner of the storehouse, encloses the whole property. Overall the buildings are spaciously arranged, and the house is relatively well preserved without alteration to its original form. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at times due to the personal circumstances of the owner.
