This house was built in 1885, the 22nd year of Emperor Gojong's reign. Sited on broad open fields, it originally included an anchae (main house), sarangchae (men's quarters), haengnangchae (servants' quarters) and gwangchae (storehouse), but the haengnangchae and gwangchae were demolished in the 1920s. Today only the anchae and sarangchae remain, standing well apart from each other, giving the house a calm and settled appearance set amid the wide fields. The U-shaped sarangchae stands on a slightly sloping site at the front of the house, higher at the rear and lower at the front. Centred on the sarang room (reception room) and the sarang daecheong (wooden-floored hall), the section that turns to the left contains a rear room, the sarang kitchen and a front room, while to the right are a small room, an adjoining room and a numaru (a raised, open wooden-floored pavilion room). The numaru is open on all four sides, with only a simple railing fitted on the west side. The anchae has a straight single-row plan, arranged from the left with a kitchen, main bedroom, daecheong and adjoining room. A board-floored veranda (toenmaru) runs in front of the main bedroom, connecting it to the daecheong. In the courtyard in front of the kitchen stands a stand of earthenware jars. At the time of the survey the house was already much worn and decayed, but it was recognised as academically valuable on the grounds that even what remains should be preserved, and it has accordingly been designated and conserved. At the time of designation it was named 'Yeongdong Song Jae-mun's House', but on 29 January 2007 the designated name was changed to 'Soseok House, Yeongdong', after Soseok, the pen name of Song Byeong-pil, who built the house. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at times owing to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
