Hong Sun-hyeong’s House, Sejong
세종 홍판서댁 · 世宗 洪判書宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAccording to an inscription recorded on the beam of the anchae's daecheong (main wooden-floored hall), the house was built in 1866, the third year of Emperor Gojong's reign. It stands facing south on a gently sloping site amid fields. A raised U-shaped anchae (main house) and a lower U-shaped sarangchae (men's quarters) interlock to form a square-shaped plan. The inner courtyard is a tightly enclosed, roughly square space. Passing through the gate, the sarangchae stands directly ahead, facing not the anchae but the gate. Its central section is the main block, with the one-bay wings on either side turning toward the anchae. The main block consists of the daecheong and a lower and upper room, with a board-floored veranda (toenmaru) in front; the wings on either side hold a storeroom, rooms and a hamsil (a small heated side room). The anchae likewise consists of a main block and wings, with its main block — a spacious daecheong and the main bedroom — facing south. Placing both the main bedroom and the daecheong facing south is a layout found in the central provinces such as Gyeonggi, Hwanghae and Chungcheong. The right-hand wing of the anchae holds a long kitchen, with a small side door beside it connecting to the sarangchae. The left-hand wing holds an upper room and a kitchen, together with a middle gate connecting to the sarangchae's storeroom. There is a well in the inner courtyard, a stand of earthenware jars on the hill behind the house, and junipers, persimmon trees and jujube trees planted at fitting spots in the back garden. Built using classical techniques, the house survives in relatively good condition and, with its square-shaped plan rare in the surrounding area, has been designated and conserved accordingly. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at times owing to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
