Choe Ik-su’s House, Boeun
보은 최감찰댁 · 報恩 崔監察宅

An inscription on the ridge beam of the main house (anchae) records that it was built in 1892, the 29th year of King Gojong. The main house and the men's quarters (sarangchae) appear to have been built together, while the gatehouse, storehouse and shed were added separately afterwards. Crossing a broad open yard and entering through the east gate, the outer gatehouse stands to the right and the sarangchae to its left, with a modest courtyard in front of it. Passing through the outer gate, a middle gatehouse stands at right angles to the sarangchae. A wall bent in an L-shape runs between the middle gatehouse and the sarangchae, marking the boundary with the inner courtyard. Passing through the door at the centre of the middle gatehouse leads directly into the spacious inner courtyard, with the anchae facing the same direction as the middle gatehouse opposite it. The anchae has a single-row ('一'-shaped) plan typical of the southern provinces. From the left there is a kitchen, then the main bedroom (anbang) with an adjoining small side room, then the wooden-floored hall (daecheong) and a side room (geonneonbang); a narrow veranda (toenmaru) runs along the front from the anbang to the geonneonbang. One bay of the daecheong is fitted out as a small shrine room housing the ancestral tablets. The sarangchae is likewise a single-row building, arranged from the left as side room, daecheong, reception room (sarangbang) and kitchen. The overall layout links the outer yard to the sarang courtyard, then through the outer gate to the middle yard, and through the middle gate to the broad inner courtyard, forming a connected sequence of spaces. The house preserves a spatial structure typical of a Korean yangban residence. Note: this heritage site may have restricted opening due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
