The sangnyangmun (ridge-beam inscription) in the anchae records that the house was repaired in 1924, suggesting that it was first built earlier, around the mid-nineteenth century. The ㄱ-shaped anchae faces south, with the sarangchae placed diagonally opposite it, giving an overall layout in the shape of an open ㅁ. This type of floor plan is found mainly along the central west coast, so its presence here in the Eumseong region gives it scholarly value. In the anchae, centred on the daecheong hall at the front, the geonneonbang lies to the right, and to the left is the upper room, with the main room and kitchen arranged around the corner. The toenmaru veranda in front of the geonneonbang was built raised, to give it the elegance of a naeru (inner pavilion). The kitchen is worth noting for its unusual kkachigumeong ("magpie hole"), a vent running up through the roof to let smoke and steam escape. The sarangchae faces outward, away from the house, so that only its rear is visible from the anchae. From the left one finds the kitchen, the sarang room and the daecheong, and then, around the corner, a wooden-floored room, the main gate and a storeroom. Overall it is considered to retain the simple, unaffected character of vernacular house architecture. At the time of its designation the name was "Eumseong Seo Jeong-u's House", but this was changed on 29 January 2007 to "Gongsanjeong House, Eumseong", reflecting that the hill behind the village is shaped like the character 公 ("gong"), and that the village came to be called Gongsanjeong because a pavilion and a pavilion tree once stood there. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at times due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
