Seong Jang-hwan’s House, Yeongdong
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The house comprises a main house (anchae), a men's quarters (sarangchae), a storehouse wing (gwangchae), a gatehouse, a small side gate (ilgak gate) and a shrine (sadang). All the buildings, including the anchae, were built from the early 20th century onward, with the sole exception of the gwangchae, a very unusual building that can be dated to around the 18th century. The gwangchae is a timber-framed, thatched-roof building; only its rightmost bay is left open to the outside and used as a shed, while the remaining three bays are enclosed with plank walls and floored with wooden boards to serve as storage space. This construction method and layout represent a very old technique. The anchae stands to the left of the gwangchae, oriented north–south, and sits attractively against the wooded hill behind it. From the left it is arranged as side room (geonneonbang), wooden-floored hall (daecheong), main bedroom (anbang) and kitchen, with the shrine positioned to the right of the kitchen. The sarangchae stands opposite the anchae and consists of two reception-room (sarangbang) bays, a kitchen and a kitchen room. The rear wall of the sarangbang projects out under the eaves and is used as a built-in cupboard. Note: this heritage site is generally open to the public, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
