Jo Deok-su’s House, Danyang
단양 조덕수 고택 · 丹陽 趙德壽 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSet in a deep mountain valley beside a stretch of the Namhan River, this building dates from the mid-19th century. It is a farmhouse-type dwelling in which an L-shaped ('ㄱ'-shaped) main house (anchae) and an angled ('ㄴ'-shaped) servants' quarters (haengnangchae) together form an open 'ㅁ' (box) shape. The L-shaped anchae, thought to have been built around the mid-19th century, is a fine building. A narrow veranda (toenmaru) runs in front of the wooden-floored hall (daecheong), and further toenmaru are set behind the kitchen and the main bedroom (anbang). The floor plan follows the style typical of the central inland region. To the south-west are two kitchen bays with a two-bay anbang behind them; the building then turns to form a two-bay daecheong and a small room. A lower room is attached to the south of the kitchen, a feature belonging to the southern-style tradition. In front of the small room there is a firebox (agungi) but no wooden floor. The haengnangchae was originally a single-row ('一'-shaped) building, but appears to have been altered into an L shape in recent times by the addition of a servants' room. From the right it is arranged as a storeroom, a stable, the gate bay and a gatekeeper's room, then turns inward to a two-bay servants' room. Here the gate bay faces north-east while the daecheong of the anchae faces south-east, so that, unlike an ordinary house, the gate of the haengnangchae is turned to face away from the main axis. Although the overall layout departs from the standard open 'ㅁ' shape, the house is worth recognising for having an anchae built in the L-shaped form found in this region.
