Hakjae House, Hwasun
화순 학재고택 · 和順 鶴齋古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in the mid-19th century, the house is said to have originally formed a single house with the residence of Yang Jae-guk to the west, in the relationship of main hall (anchae) and men's quarters (sarangchae). Today, even taking both houses together, it is difficult to say they retain their original appearance as first built. Although this building is called the main hall, it appears to have changed from its original form. It currently has a structure with wings on either side; whereas in the central region such wings usually project out from the main body, here they are attached flush to it. In the southern style, the right wing has two bays of kitchen and a kitchen room, beside which are two bays of a large room with a small storage room behind. In front of the large room is a narrow veranda (toenmaru), and beside it is a large daecheong of two bays. The left wing has two bays of daecheong and a room, with a narrow board floor (jjokmaru) in front of both the daecheong and the toenmaru. The outer gate quarters is straight ('一'-shaped) in plan with six bays, and appears to have been built in the mid-20th century. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
