Jehojeong House, Gokseong

Built in the late Joseon period, 'Gunjichon-jeongsa' is the name of the men's quarters (sarangchae), which together with the main hall (anchae) and the outer gate quarters forms the whole complex. According to tradition it was built in the mid-18th century, but the main hall is presumed to have been built around the early 19th century. The main hall is straight ('一'-shaped) in plan; from the west there are two bays of kitchen, upper and lower, beside which is a large room with narrow verandas (toenmaru) laid at both front and back. At the front are two bays of daecheong, and at the rear a storeroom (dojang) and a small room. The front of the large room and the storeroom are open without doors, while the front of the small room is closed off with a door. The building stands on a high platform, and at the front of the room is an opening through which smoke escapes from the chimney of the large room. To the east of the servants' quarters in front of the main hall's yard stands Gunji-jeongsa, which serves both as a men's quarters and as a communal gathering hall for the village. It is said to have formerly been used as the village school (seodang), and having no walls at front or back made it easy to access. From the west there are men's rooms, upper and lower, beside which is an open daecheong, with wooden floors laid at both the front and back of the rooms. On the hill in front of the house stands a pavilion said to have been built in the 18th century.
