Yi Jeong-rae’s House, Boseong
보성 이정래 고택 · 寶城 李井來 古宅

Facing Obongsan Mountain in a small valley open to the sea, several houses stand together here, with a pond at the centre of the village. Passing through an alley lined with a trifoliate-orange hedge to the east of the pond, one finds an east-facing gate quarters and a south-facing shed. Through the main gate lies the inner courtyard, with the south-facing main quarters to the north; to the west is a small storehouse, and to the south a large storehouse. The main quarters was built around 1900; the storehouse opposite it is somewhat older, and the rest of the buildings are thought to date from the early 20th century. The main quarters is U-shaped, with wings added at the rear. From the west are the kitchen, the principal room, a two-bay hall, and at the end a small room. Verandas run along the front of all these, except that in front of the kitchen there is an earthen-floored storage space, and to the southeast a space for storing books. There is a door between the hall and the veranda floor, and also a door between the upper and lower sections of the small room; the small room appears to have served as a kind of reception room, or as a scholar's study, a use of space often seen in the southern provinces. The storehouse facing the main quarters is a single-row building, built on lower ground and deliberately kept low so as not to block the fine view from the main quarters. Its western bay has an earthen floor, and the rest have a well-frame board floor. The gate quarters has a gate at its centre, with a stable to the north and a gatekeeper's room to the south. Overall the house is strongly imbued with the atmosphere of the southern-provinces style, and the village pond and trifoliate-orange hedge add further to its beauty. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at the owner's discretion.
