Yi Seung-rae’s House, Boseong
보성 이승래 고택 · 寶城 李昇來 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe house was built in the late 1800s and stands in a single-clan village of the Yi family, who had earlier erected a gate honouring a filial son (hyojamun) and a pavilion at the entrance to the village. It is a rare type with an L-shaped plan comprising the main hall (anchae, the women's quarters and household centre), a storehouse hall (gotganchae) and a shrine hall (sadangchae). The main hall is itself L-shaped, an unusual arrangement in which the men's quarters (sarangchae) are attached to it rather than built as a separate structure. From the west, half a bay on each side forms the kitchen, the bay in front of it is the kitchen room, and beside these are the main bedroom, the upper room and a small back room. In front of the main bedroom and the upper room is a narrow wooden veranda (toenmaru); next to this, centred on a wooden-floored room, two bays on either side form the outer wooden floor, and in front of the wooden-floored room is the inner wooden floor. At the end of the inner floor the plan turns to place the upper sarang room and, below it, the sarang room (the men's reception room). The sarang room is partitioned off by doors, and a narrow veranda runs along the east side of it and of the outer wooden floor. At the southern end of the sarang room is a small kitchen whose pillars are raised unusually high, giving it almost the appearance of a second storey, with a loft built above. At the rear of the main hall is an added kitchen-and-storehouse wing, built to extend the kitchen space, which is divided into a storage area and a kitchen entrance area. The storehouse hall is entirely floored with wood and left open underneath, preserving the storehouse form characteristic of the southern region; only three of its four front bays have doors. The shrine hall, set slightly higher to the north-east of the main hall, is enclosed by its own separate wall and is relatively large for a shrine. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but access may be restricted for personal reasons at the discretion of the owner.
