Jonjae House, Jangheung
장흥 존재고택 · 長興 存齋古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house (jongga) of the Jangheung Wi clan, standing deep within the village; the surrounding scenery is beautiful, making it especially suited for spending cool summers. There is a pond in the outer yard, a thick bamboo grove grows behind the house, and the main hall (anchae) stands on high ground in front of it. Facing it is the gate passage; to the north of the inner yard is a shed (heotganchae), and to the south is a study (seojae). To the east of the main hall, up several flights of steps, stands the shrine (sadangchae). The gate has, at its centre, the gate passage and a room, with sheds on either side. To the right of the gate quarters, the study is built in a very small and unusual structure. Half of its roof is a hip-and-gable roof (paljakjibung), whose profile takes the shape of the character 八 (eight), while the side adjoining the main hall is a simple gable roof (matbaejibung) whose profile takes the shape of the character 人 (person). The main hall is built on a double platform; from the left there is a kitchen at the front and a storeroom (gwang) at the back, while to the right are the women's room (anbang) and four bays of daecheong. The toenmaru in front of the anbang extends all the way to the southern end. The daecheong has two-leaf doors at both front and back, and beside it is a heated room (ondolbang). To the left of the main hall is the shed, and to the north is the shrine, presumed to have been built in the late 19th century. Behind the house is a garden that lends it charm, and the chimney of the main hall, built in the middle of the rear garden, has its wall built up with roof tiles, creating a traditional garden atmosphere. At the time of designation the name was 'Jangheung Wi Gye-hwan House' (長興魏桂煥家屋), but since this is the old house of the Silhak scholar Wi Baek-gyu (1727–1798), pen name Jonjae, of the reign of King Jeongjo of Joseon, and it stands in a clan village of the Jangheung Wi lineage, the designated name was changed on 29 January 2007 to 'Jonjae House, Jangheung', after his pen name. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
