The house was first built during the reign of King Seongjong of Joseon by Yi Ae, and is said to be the birthplace of Yi Hyeon-il, who inherited and developed the Neo-Confucian scholarship of Yi Hwang. The present buildings are said to have been moved back from their original site, and Chunghyodang (the men's quarters) dates from around the time of the Japanese invasions of 1592–98. The main hall, the men's quarters, a stable, a shrine and a pavilion are arranged facing south on a broad site, and the house is on a large scale, with a fairly extensive bamboo grove in the rear garden as well. The main hall and the men's quarters combine to form an open square-shaped courtyard, square in plan but with one side left open. The L-shaped main hall and the L-shaped men's quarters face each other, with the men's quarters stretching out lengthwise from east to west. On the site overlooking the fields in front, the men's quarters lies to the left and the main hall to the right, with the shrine behind the main hall; the shrine is set off by its own wall. On a high platform stands Chunghyodang itself, still used today as a place for educating later generations of scholars. As a Joseon-period house of the yangban class, complete with main hall, men's quarters and shrine, it is thought to have first been built in the early Joseon period, though the present buildings were moved here in a later period. The main hall in particular is thought to have been moved to its present site in the mid-Joseon period; although it appears to have been somewhat altered, it remains an important source for the study of Joseon-period housing.
