Manhoe House, Bonghwa
봉화 만회고택 · 奉化 晩悔古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house faces south, backed by a densely wooded hill deep within the right side of Haejeo-ri village. It was the home of Kim Geon-su, a civil official of the late Joseon period. Kim Geon-su passed the state examination in 1830, the 30th year of King Sunjo, and went on to serve as county magistrate, prefect, and right deputy royal secretary. He built the sarangchae, the men's quarters, which bears the name Myeongwollu, and had it repaired in 1850, the first year of King Cheoljong. The anchae, or women's quarters, is said to have been bought from a member of the Yeo clan living here by Kim Geon-su's ancestor six generations back, when he first settled in the village. The house consists of a U-shaped anchae and a T-shaped sarangchae; a middle-gate quarters (jungmun-chae) once stood between them but no longer survives. At the south-facing centre of the anchae is a wooden-floored hall (daecheong), flanked symmetrically by the main room (anbang) and the upper room (sangbang). A single-row middle-gate quarters originally stood in front, but since this has disappeared the south side is now open. The sarangchae stands to the east, positioned slightly further east than the end of the anchae's east wing. The anchae is presumed to date from the mid-Joseon period; the storage spaces set behind the main room and the sarang room follow the square-shaped house layout traditional to the old Gyeongbuk region, making it valuable material for the study of Joseon-period housing. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but visits may be restricted for personal reasons of the owner or others.
