Husongdang House, Cheongsong
청송 후송당 고택 · 靑松 後松堂 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house stands on a low hill surrounded on all sides by mountains, and is said to have been built by Jo Yong-jeong, known by his pen name Husong, grandfather of the two generations preceding the present owner, Jo Chang-rae. The men's quarters was built in 1935, during the Japanese colonial period, and the main house in 1947, shortly after liberation, so the house is not particularly old. Even so, it is a large house of more than fifty bays, with a good arrangement of buildings and a relatively simple exterior. In this house, the main house section and the men's quarters section are arranged side by side. Passing through the L-shaped inner gate quarters, one finds the single-row main house; to its right, through the towering gate of the single-row outer quarters, lies the men's quarters. Husongdang is a modern-style hanok that, from the mid-19th century onward, as traditional Korean houses came under the influence of foreign architecture emphasising modern rationalism and function, sought change in its spatial composition, techniques and materials. Unlike the layout of Joseon-period houses, in which men's and women's living spaces were strictly separated, here the main house section, the women's domain, and the men's quarters section, the men's domain, are arranged side by side, following the tendency of modern hanok to integrate the spaces of men and women and to emphasise function. The inclusion of a bathroom and toilet inside the men's quarters, and the use of red brick and glass windows, are also of academic value as clear evidence of how hanok changed in the period following Japanese colonial rule. Please note that while this heritage site is generally open to visitors, access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner.
