This is the house of Jo Hak-sin (1732–1800), seventh-generation descendant of the Neo-Confucian scholar Jo Ho-ik (sobriquet Jisan), who lived in the time of King Seonjo of Joseon; Manchwidang is the name of the sarangchae, the men's quarters. The new sarangchae, Gwangmyeongheon, along with the byeolmyo, a detached shrine, and Bobonjae, are said to have been built at a later date. The house stands in the middle of a flat village surrounded by pine-forested hills. Between the roofs of the roadside new sarangchae and the raised gate of the haengnangchae, the roofs of the sarangchae and anchae are visible in a low, layered view. The sarangchae, set apart from the haengnangchae, forms a square shape together with the anchae, the women's quarters, with a shrine to its right; behind that stand the byeolmyo and Bobonjae, giving the house the full character of a scholar-official's residence. The anchae is U-shaped: of its central four bays, the right two form the main room (anbang), followed by a wooden-floored hall (daecheong) and a small room. At each end of the central section are wings; on the anbang side these hold the kitchen and storeroom, and on the daecheong side a lower room and a wooden-floored room. The sarangchae, bearing the name-board 'Manchwidang', has the sarangbang in its left two bays, followed by a daecheong, with a room for ancestral rites at the far right end. To the left of the sarangchae is a middle gate linking the sarang courtyard to the inner courtyard. This is a late-Joseon-period house; although the mill building no longer survives, the anchae, sarangchae, new sarangchae, and detached shrine together retain the full range of elements of a scholar-official's residence, offering valuable material for studying the architectural style and domestic life of the period. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but visits may be restricted for personal reasons of the owner or others.
