Sugok House, Andong
안동 수곡고택 · 安東 樹谷古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house (jongga) built in 1792, the 16th year of King Jeongjo, by Gwon Jo in honour of the virtue of his grandfather Gwon Bo. It stands with a low hill as a backdrop to the north of a village of around fifty households. Gwon Bo lived frugally throughout his life, and the men's quarters roof of the main building was given a simple gable roof rather than an ornate hipped-and-gabled roof, in tribute to his modesty. On a south-facing site stand a U-shaped (ㄷ-shaped) main house, a single-row men's quarters and inner gate quarters, a single-row detached annexe, and a single-row outer gate quarters. Passing through the door in the right-hand bay of the outer quarters, one finds the men's quarters and the main house arranged around a wide front courtyard in an open square (ㅁ-shaped) layout. On higher ground behind the main house stands a one-bay shrine. The annexe stands to the west of the site, between the main house and the outer gate quarters; because it was newly built as a men's quarters, it is also called the New Sarang Quarters, or Iljijae. It was built as a place for scholarly study and for training disciples. Overall, with its main house, men's quarters, inner gate quarters, detached annexe and outer gate quarters all present, this is a typical yangban house of the Joseon period. At the time of designation the name was Gail Sugok Jongtaek, but since the North Gyeongsang-designated folk heritage Andong Gwon Clan Byeonggok Jongtaek is the true head house, while Gail Sugok Jongtaek, a branch house, had mistakenly been listed as the head house, the designated name was changed to Gail Sugok Gotaek (28 December 2007). It was later renamed again, in accordance with the naming guidelines of 28 February 2017, which use the location, to Sugok House, Andong. Please note that while this heritage site is generally open to visitors, access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner.
