Hahoe Village, Andong, is a clan village of the Pungsan Ryu family, a yangban village of the Joseon period that has well preserved its outstanding natural scenery together with folk and Confucian traditions. This house was built by Yu Gyo-mok, who served as magistrate of Yonggung. It was built in 1836, the second year of King Heonjong of Joseon, and stands beside the road dividing the village's southern and northern sections; because it lies to the east of Hahoe Village, it is also known as Hadong House. The men's quarters, main house and outer quarters are separately built, but the men's quarters and main house together form an open square (ㅁ-shaped) layout. The main house has three central bays given over to a wooden-floored hall, with a two-storey storeroom installed in the rear half-bay on the right. To the left of the hall are a two-bay main room and a two-bay kitchen, and to the right are a side room, a wooden floor and a middle room. The men's quarters consists of a two-bay hall and a sarang room; a wooden floor runs along the front of the room and connects to the inner gate quarters. The inner gate quarters has a one-bay gate and three storerooms arranged to close off the front of the inner courtyard. The outer quarters measures four bays, with the main gate on the left and, on the right, a two-bay servants' room and a stable. The house retains its antique character well, and the wooden floor placed between the side room and the middle room gives a distinctive variation to the layout, making it valuable material for the study of houses of the late Joseon period.
