The house was built around 1800 when Kim Jung-hyu, pen name Hagam (1797–1863), set up a separate branch household. It is a square (ㅁ-shaped) house, unusual in that the anchae (women's quarters) and sarangchae (men's quarters) are divided by an inner gate. Originally a sarangchae, a servants' quarters (haengnangchae), and a thatched study stood outside the inner gate, but today only their sites remain. The house was known as "Chambong Taek," it is said, because Kim Jung-hyu had served as chambong, a minor custodial official, at the royal tomb of Jereung. As one turns in from the entrance to the village, on a slightly sloping site enclosed by an earthen wall, a raised gate is set into the servants' quarters. Across a broad courtyard stands the anchae, with a storehouse building to its right and the sarangchae to the east of the courtyard. To the left of the inner gate leading to the inner courtyard is a sarang room, and to the right are a stable and a kitchen room. The anchae is centred on a wooden-floored hall as wide as the inner courtyard, with a side room to its left and the main room to its right; four bays of storehouses stand in a row to the right of the anchae. The sarangchae forms an L-shape (ㄱ-shape), with a heated room and one open-floored bay behind a front veranda. The servants' quarters originally had five bays: only the foundation stones remain of the two bays to the right of the main gate, while the two bays to the left are heated rooms. It is a type of house commonly found in the Andong region and provides valuable material for research into late Joseon-period housing. At the time of designation the site was named "Omi-dong Chambong Taek" (五美洞 參奉宅), but because "Omi-dong Chambong" in the existing heritage name was being mistaken for an official title, it was judged necessary to correct this; on 21 December 2009 the name was changed to "Hagam House, Andong" (安東 鶴巖古宅), combining the place name with Hagam, the pen name of the builder, Kim Jung-hyu. Note: This heritage site is generally open to the public for viewing, but access may be restricted due to the owner's personal circumstances.
