Doam Head House, Andong
안동 도암종택 · 安東 陶庵宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the house of Kim Hu (1613–1695), the 23rd-generation descendant of the Uiseong Kim clan; it was built in 1630, the eighth year of King Injo of Joseon, by his father-in-law, Kwon Je. It is called "Yulli Jongtaek" because the old name of this place was Yulli. Set against a low, thickly wooded hill to the rear, the house sits on a high stone platform, giving the whole building a raised appearance. The house forms a square (ㅁ-shape), made up of the anchae and a front section comprising the sarangchae, the main gate, and a cattle shed. In the front section, the three bays to the left of the main gate form the sarang area, where two rooms are followed by a projecting wooden-floored room forming the left wing, while to the right a cattle-shed bay is followed by a heated room, forming the right wing. The anchae is centred on a two-bay wooden-floored hall, with a storage room and a sarang room to its left, and, to its right, a two-bay kitchen adjoining the main room. The sarangchae section, having been rebuilt, appears somewhat altered, but the anchae retains a simple dignity, and in its layout and architectural style it provides valuable material for research into mid-Joseon housing. Note: This heritage site is generally open to the public for viewing, but access may be restricted due to the owner's personal circumstances.
