Seojijaesa Ritual House of the Uiseong Kim Clan, Andong

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the jaesa, a ritual house used for ancestral rites at a grave site, of Kim Seong-il (1538–1593). Its date of construction is unknown, but a stele erected for Kim Seong-il a short distance from the jaesa bears the date 1634, the 12th year of King Injo, suggesting the building itself is somewhat later, and it is presumed to date from the 1700s. The house is square-shaped and stands at the foot of the hill where Kim Seong-il's grave is located; its front section is two storeys. Below at the front are a storeroom, gate quarters, and cattle shed, while above is a raised, floored pavilion. The pavilion was used as a place to eat and drink after ancestral rites, while the main block was used to prepare the food and materials needed for the rites. Because the anchae stands on higher ground at the rear, making use of the sloping terrain, the floor of its hall is higher than the floor of the pavilion below. Passing through the gate beneath the pavilion, one faces a wooden-floored hall (daecheong) directly ahead; to its left is the main room (anbang), which can also be reached directly from the daecheong via a back room. To the right are two upper rooms and a wooden-floored room, followed by two sarang rooms. The front pavilion floor is walled on the front and left side, with a door at the centre of each bay; a narrow railed veranda also connects the inner daecheong to the pavilion floor. The building follows the general form of a square-shaped jaesa with a raised pavilion at the front, but it is unusual in setting the inner daecheong higher than the pavilion floor. Although it appears to have undergone some partial alteration, it is of great architectural-historical value as an example of late-Joseon jaesa architecture. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but visits may be restricted for personal reasons of the owner or others.
