Oryuheon House, Andong
안동 오류헌 고택 · 安東 五柳軒 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis late Joseon-period house faces south-east, set against the mountain ridge running down from the north-west of Cheongok in Jirye-ri, overlooking the Banbyeoncheon Stream. It was built by Kim Won-jung, third son of Jichon, who served as daesaseong, head of the state Confucian academy, under King Sukjong of Joseon, when he set up a separate branch household at Cheongok. The anchae appears to have been built in the 1700s, while the sarangchae was extensively rebuilt in 1920. The house was relocated to its present site in 1990 because of the construction of the Imha Dam. The anchae, sarangchae, and gate quarters together form an open square (ㅁ-shape). A mill building stands to the right of the anchae, a cattle shed occupies one side of the sarang courtyard, and a shrine sits on a low hill outside the wall, to the rear. An earthen wall was built in a square to enclose the buildings, with a raised gate set on the south-east side. Features of the house include a structure that allows the flue channels of the anchae kitchen to be cleaned, a lift-type shrine cabinet in the sarangchae raised and lowered by a pulled cord, and flooring woven so tightly that it does not let water through. The courtyards — the sarang courtyard, inner courtyard, and rear courtyard — are also clearly separated by buildings and walls according to their function, making explicit the Joseon-period distinction between the inner and outer living spaces of a house. With its many structural features, it is a beautiful house of great importance for research into ordinary Joseon-period housing. At the time of designation it was named "Jiryedong Oryuheon" (知禮洞 五柳軒), but at the request of the owner, Kim Won-taek, and to clarify the site's location, the name was changed on 16 June 2009 to "Oryuheon House, Andong" (安東 五柳軒). Note: This heritage site is generally open to the public for viewing, but access may be restricted due to the owner's personal circumstances.
