Ildu House, Hamyang
함양 일두고택 · 咸陽 一蠹古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the former residence of Jeong Yeo-chang (1450–1504), a great scholar of the reign of King Seongjong of Joseon; most of the buildings standing today were rebuilt in the late Joseon period. The sarangchae (men's quarters) is said to have been rebuilt by the current owner's great-great-grandfather, and the anchae (women's quarters) is said to have been rebuilt about 300 years ago. The site of the house is also renowned as an auspicious location that has been maintained for over 500 years. On the sotdaemun, a raised gate with a taller central bay, four commemorative plaques (jeongnyeo) honouring meritorious conduct are displayed. Going straight in through the main gate, there is a single-pillar gate (ilgakmun) leading to the anchae, while going diagonally to the left leads to the sarangchae. The sarangchae, built on a high stone platform, is L-shaped. Passing through the ilgakmun and following the side of the sarangchae, there is another middle gate (jungmun), beyond which stands the large, straight-lined anchae. To the left is the lower quarters, and behind the anchae are a byeoldang (detached annex) and an inner sarangchae. Within a separately walled area behind the anchae stands a gamyo, a family shrine for ancestral rites. Of particular note in this house is the artificial hill built in the front yard of the sarangchae. Stones and trees were arranged appropriately to create a beautiful artificial hill following strict principles, though its original form can no longer be seen exactly as it once was. Together with these various structural features, the household items have retained their old appearance, providing valuable material for understanding the lifestyle of the time. At the time of designation the name was 'Hamyang Jeong Byeong-ho House', but since this is the birthplace of Jeong Yeo-chang, pen name Ildu (1450–1504), a renowned Confucian scholar of the reign of King Seongjong of Joseon, and the house was rebuilt by his descendants a century after his death, the designated name was changed on 29 January 2007 to Ildu House, Hamyang, after his pen name. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but viewing may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
