The Historic House of Ochu-ri, Yesan is a thatched-roof house thought to have been built in the early 19th century. It stands facing south-east on an auspicious site where the hill behind spreads out to embrace the house on both sides, with broad fields opening out in front. A dense pine forest and a pond were created on the hillside to the right, and trees were planted in a row across the fields to form an approach road, giving the house a sense of cosiness. The anchae (main house) and sarangchae (men's quarters) are arranged side by side around the inner courtyard, with the gwangchae (storage wing) enclosing the left side and the kitchen enclosing the right, so that the whole forms an open square-shaped (ㅁ) layout. The anchae, five bays wide and one and a half bays deep, has three rooms arranged in sequence from the left, with the kitchen on the right; the kitchen connects at a right angle to a storage room, a shed and a cattle shed. The sarangchae is a four-bay building with two sarang rooms and, to their right, a gate room and a storage room. The gwangchae consists of a storage room and a shed, with a small side door linking it to the sarangchae. The chimneys, built by piling up an earthen wall in a cone shape, setting a log frame on top and covering it with thatch, use a technique typical of mountain regions and have a distinctive traditional character. This is a house whose carefully composed layout on an auspicious site blends with its surroundings to form a snug, well-ordered space.
