Historic House of the Yeoheung Min Clan, Buyeo

This is a house from the late Joseon period, set on a spacious site facing south against the backdrop of a low hill. A roof tile of the sarangchae bears the inscription 'the 87th year of Sungjeong' (1705), but this appears unrelated to the actual construction date; judging from the overall style, the house seems to have been built in the late 19th century. Behind the straight-lined gatehouse (daemunchae) stands the anchae, with the sarangchae positioned diagonally opposite it, together forming a square layout. In front of this stands a row of servants' quarters that was recently restored. The anchae is an eight-kan house arranged, from left to right, as kitchen, main room, daecheong (wooden-floored hall), smaller room and an inner wooden floor (anmaru); the anmaru, which projects out to the right, is unusual. The sarangchae is arranged with a storeroom, middle gate area, kitchen, sarangbang (men's room) and wooden floor; it shows construction techniques similar to the anchae but is built higher, to convey dignity. The middle gate is set at an angle of one kan so that the anchae is not directly visible upon entering. The house shows the typical layout of a yangban, or aristocratic, residence, and the old trees around it lend it an air of antiquity. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but viewing may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
