Champandaek House in Oeam Village, Asan
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Located to the east of Oeam-ri Folk Village, Champandaek consists of a larger house and a smaller house standing side by side, separated by a wall. It is said to have been built in the late 19th century by Yi Jeong-nyeol, who served as jikhaksa of the Kyujanggak and as champan (vice minister), after he received the land as a gift from Emperor Gojong. The shrine of the larger house and the gate wing and shrine of the smaller house appear to have been built in the early 20th century. The larger house faces south-east and forms an open "ㅁ"-shaped layout: an "L"-shaped sarangchae (men's quarters) and storehouse wing wrap around a "ㄱ"-shaped anchae (women's quarters) and its inner courtyard, all set within a straight, single-range gate wing fitted with a raised central gate. The gate wing is angled slightly to the west so that the sarangchae is not directly visible on entry. Behind the anchae, to the north-west, stands the shrine, and a stone wall runs in front of the main gate to create a deep, sheltered approach. The smaller house, just below the larger one, faces south-west. It has a similarly open "ㅁ"-shaped layout, with a straight, single-range gate wing standing in front. The layout of its anchae and sarangchae resembles that of the larger house, and its shrine stands behind the anchae to the north-east. The gate wing has a thatched roof and a flat, ground-level gate and, unlike that of the larger house, is angled to the east to face the sarangchae. The stone wall built in front of the larger house's gate to shape this approach is a distinctive feature. The house uses stone walls to divide its grounds attractively, and its furnishings have been well preserved, offering a glimpse of an older way of life as a traditional Korean dwelling. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted for personal reasons of the owner or others.
