Yi Ha-bok’s House, Seocheon
서천 이하복 고택 · 舒川 李夏馥 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis thatched-roof house stands facing south-west on an auspicious site; the anchae was built in the late 19th century, and in the early 20th century the sarangchae, arraechae (lower quarters) and gwangchae (storehouse) were added while the anchae was also extended. Centred on the inner courtyard, the L-shaped anchae, the straight-lined sarangchae in front of it, and the gwangchae to the left of the anchae together form an open square layout. In addition, a straight-lined arraechae stands about two kan away to the right of the sarangchae. The anchae was originally a three-kan house consisting of a kitchen and two rooms, but in later years the kitchen on the left was enlarged, and a daecheong (wooden-floored hall) and a room, along with a 'heotcheong' used as both kitchen and storage shed, were added on the right. The sarangchae has a gate on the left and consists of a kitchen and a sarangbang (men's room). The arraechae is an independent space where the daughter-in-law lived, consisting of a kitchen, two rooms and a storeroom, allowing her to keep house separately. As a traditional farmhouse of the central region, it is interesting that, following traditional technique, the front roof of the anchae extends further than the rear, and it is unusual in providing the daughter-in-law with an independent living space. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but viewing may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
