Saun House, Hongseong
홍성 사운고택 · 洪城 士雲古宅

The house faces south, cradled by a low hill densely wooded with pine trees, and its architectural style suggests it was built in the mid-19th century. A pine grove was also planted near the entrance, and a pond was dug in front of the house with willow trees planted around it. Behind a straight-line haengnangchae, a row of servants' quarters fitted with a tall, raised gate, stands a straight-line sarangchae, or men's quarters, connected at its left end to a jungmun, or middle gate. Passing through the middle gate and turning east leads to an L-shaped anchae, or women's quarters, with a straight-line gwangchae, a storehouse, enclosing the inner courtyard to the east. On a separate axis behind the storehouse stands a straight-line ansarangchae, an inner men's-quarters wing, enclosed by its own wall with a separate gate. The rear left side of this inner wing is left open so that it connects with the women's quarters. As is occasionally seen in the central region, a sarangbang, a men's reception room, was also placed within the women's quarters. This traditional house preserves well the architectural style of the late Joseon period. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the owner's personal circumstances.
