Jo Gil-bang's house stands in a mountain village at an altitude of around 450 metres, and is the oldest of the six houses that survive there today. The family originally lived near Dongchon Airfield in Daegu, but after a family misfortune in the generation of the ninth-generation ancestor Gwang-guk, one member came alone to settle in this remote spot. The anchae, or women's quarters, was built around 1784, at the time of settlement; the sarangchae, or men's quarters, was extended around 1925; and the arraechae, the lower detached wing, having collapsed, was rebuilt around 1955. The anchae sits on a high stone platform, with the arraechae and sarangchae facing each other across the low yard in front of it, to the left and right respectively. The building behind the sarangchae is a shed. The anchae follows a floor plan typical of the southern region, with the kitchen, main room, daecheong (a wooden-floored hall) and side room arranged from left to right. The low doorways linking the daecheong to the main room and side room, and the tiny door in front of the main room, are so small that passing through them is difficult. Such doors, never found in upper-class houses, are typical of thatched-roof dwellings and appear to preserve the house's original appearance well. The sarangchae consists of a one-bay shed and a two-bay heated room, while the arraechae is made up, from left to right, of a mill room, a storeroom, a heated room and a cattle shed. This rare, old, thatched-roof house from the Joseon period is a valuable example: the floor plan of the anchae well illustrates the character of commoner housing in the southern region, and the small, humble doorways of the anchae, offering a genuine glimpse of a thatched house's true form, are particularly striking.
