Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMugiyeondang Garden is located on flat land where the Chirwoncheon Stream flows. On the site stands the Ju clan's old house, decorated with a red jeongnyeo (a commemorative gate honouring an act of loyalty or filial piety), and it is within the grounds of this house that Mugiyeondang Garden lies. Mugiyeondang is a garden attached to the Ju clan's old house, which was built in the 1700s. It was constructed to honour Ju Jae-seong (pen name Gukdam, 1681–1743), who distinguished himself in suppressing Yi In-jwa's Rebellion in 1728, the fourth year of King Yeongjo. Entering through the outer gate quarters and then the Hanseomun Gate, one reaches the space containing the garden. Centred on the square pond, Hahwanjeong Pavilion stands to the left, while Chunghyogak Hall and Yeongjeonggak Hall stand to the right. Above the pond stands a pavilion called Pungyongnu. To the northwest of the pond stands Ju Jae-seong's head house, the Ju Clan House at Mugi-ri, Haman, itself a Gyeongsangnam-do Folklore Heritage. The rectangular pond, 20 metres long and 12.5 metres wide, is unusually large for a private garden. Around the pond, a two-tiered embankment of natural stones was built, and at the centre of the pond an island was formed from oddly shaped rocks to create Yangsimdae, symbolising Bongnaesan, one of the mythical mountains of the immortals. This was built following the principle of the union of yin and yang, symbolising the old cosmological idea that heaven is round and earth is square; the harmony of heaven and earth thus represented stands for a miniature universe. Furthermore, the words "Bonghwangseok" (Phoenix Rock) and "a clear breeze for a hundred generations" are carved onto the stones of the artificial hill, creating a Daoist ideal world in which one wanders alongside the phoenix. Having preserved its original form relatively well, Mugiyeondang Garden is valuable material for understanding the form and spatial structure of yangban (aristocratic) family gardens of the late Joseon period. This heritage site is generally open to the public, but visiting may be restricted for personal reasons of the owner or others.
