This is a purple dallyeong (a round-collared official robe) worn by Heungseon Daewongun Yi Ha-eung (1820–1898); the dallyeong was everyday attire worn while attending to official duties. The outer fabric is purple with a round collar, the lining is red with a straight collar, and a wide dongjeong (white collar band) is attached. The sleeves are wide, and the ties are attached in matched pairs of red and purple, four in total, two on each side. On the chest of the robe is a rank badge bearing a girin (a mythical unicorn-like creature), its design indicating that his rank was that of a daegun (grand prince). The badge is finely embroidered in gold thread on black satin: the girin occupies the centre, with rocks and wave patterns embroidered below it and cloud patterns arranged to either side above. The size of the garment suggests that Heungseon Daewongun was of somewhat small stature. This robe survives in good condition and in complete form, including its girin badge, making it valuable material for the study of Korean costume.
