Semi-formal Jacket Worn by King Gwanghaegun’s Queen Consort
광해군비 당의 · 光海君妃 唐衣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a garment that belonged to Queen Consort Yu, wife of King Gwanghaegun, the fifteenth ruler of Joseon. It is a single-layered dangui, the semi-formal jacket worn by royal and noble women, cut in the shape of a long jeogori with slits at the sides, and decorated with blue flowers and birds. It is long, the lower edges of the sleeves are cut straight, and it has short, narrow ties in purple silk. The collar and dongjeong (the detachable white collar band) are wide and shaped as a dangko collar, a rounded collar style, with openings on both sides running from just below the armpit seam downward; its colours and form are almost perfectly preserved. Written on the inside of the outer collar is the inscription "丙子生王妃柳氏願命衣" (a prayer for the long life of Queen Consort Yu, born in a Byeongja year). Among the "Clothing of King Gwanghaegun, his Consort and a Court Lady" (a National Folklore Cultural Heritage) discovered in the Janggyeongpanjeon Depositories of Haeinsa Temple is a queen's long jeogori similar to this piece in form and technique. Both artefacts carry inscriptions praying for Queen Consort Yu's health and long life, and are said to have been bokjang offerings — items placed inside a Buddhist statue when it was consecrated — dedicated at a major temple, or a temple with ties to the royal family. Note: on 21 April 2006 the designated name was changed from "Gwanghaegunbi Danbaeja (光海君妃短褙子)" to "Gwanghaegunbi Dangui (光海君妃唐衣)."
