Historic House of Noeun-ri, Hongseong
홍성 노은리 고택 · 洪城 魯恩里 古宅

This historic house is associated with Seong Sam-mun, one of the Sayuksin — the Six Martyred Ministers of the Joseon dynasty. It is said to have been the house where Eom Chan, Seong Sam-mun's grandson through a daughter, lived, and that until 1676 it enshrined Seong Sam-mun's spirit tablet and held memorial rites for him. At the time of the Byeongja Purge, when all the men of Seong Sam-mun's family were executed, his second daughter, Hyo-ok, is said to have come here and spent the rest of her life holding memorial rites for her father. Making use of a somewhat elevated, sloping site, the house faces west. The main quarters (anchae) form a '⊓' shape, with the servants' quarters (haengnangchae) placed in front of them in a straight ('−') line, so that together they form an overall 'ㅁ' (enclosed-square) shape. As a result, although the inner courtyard is hidden from outside view, the daecheong — the large wooden-floored hall of the main quarters — is an open space, so the interior feels spacious. Centred on this large hall, the main quarters have the main room (anbang) and kitchen to the left, and a side room (geonneonbang) and a middle gate for access to the right. The servants' quarters contain a shed, a storeroom and a small room. This house shows building techniques from both the Chungcheong and Gyeongsang regions at once. That the main quarters, owing to the difference in ground level, stand higher than the servants' quarters and have an attic is a feature typical of the Gyeongsang region, while the differing widths of the two wings (iksa) projecting from the main quarters are a feature typical of the Chungcheong region. * Sayuksin: the six men who gave their lives in an attempt to restore King Danjong to the throne — Seong Sam-mun, Yi Gae, Bak Paeng-nyeon, Ha Wi-ji, Yu Seong-won and Yu Eung-bu. From the mid-Joseon period onward they came to be regarded as symbols of loyalty and righteousness. ** Byeongja Purge: an incident in 1456, the second year of King Sejo of Joseon, in which Seong Sam-mun and others, opposing King Sejo's measures to strengthen royal authority, plotted to depose him and restore King Danjong to the throne (also known as the Sayuksin Incident). ** Iksa: written with the character for 'wing' (翼), referring to the wing-like sections projecting from either side of the main quarters' great hall.
