Oeam Village, situated on a sloping site at the foot of Seolhwasan Mountain, is said to have been formed about 500 years ago when the Gang and Mok clans settled there. When Yi Jeong, who had held the minor post of jangsarang during the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon, moved in, the Yean Yi clan began to live there for generations. Afterwards, Yi Jeong's descendants prospered and produced many talented individuals, and the village gradually took on the character of a yangban settlement. It is said that Yi Gan, Yi Jeong's sixth-generation descendant, took 'Oeam' as his pen name, after which the village itself came to be called 'Oeam'. Today the village retains a considerable number of old houses, large and small, largely in their original form, including yangban houses such as Yeongamdaek, Champandaek and Songhwadaek, along with some fifty thatched-roof houses. The yangban houses well preserve the appearance of upper-class Joseon-period residences, and their broad courtyards and distinctive gardens convey a sense of the yangban's way of life and refined culture at the time. The thatched houses likewise retain their antique appearance well, and the alleys linked by stone walls, together with the dense surrounding woodland, lend the village an even more antique atmosphere. In particular, the survival within a single village of traditional-style upper-class, middle-class and commoner houses together makes it extremely valuable for research into village formation and traditional housing. In addition, the gardens formed where the stream originating on Seolhwasan Mountain flows through the village are highly distinctive and full of charm, so the village as a whole holds precious value. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at times owing to the personal circumstances of the owners.
