KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

These are relics excavated from the tomb of Yi Eon-chung (1524–1582), a civil official of early Joseon. Yi Eon-chung was a ninth-generation descendant of Yi Jo-nyeon (1269–1343) of the Seongju Yi clan, and during the reign of King Myeongjong he successively held a range of senior offices, including Third Counsellor of the Board of War, Inspector of the Office of the Inspector-General, Third Counsellor of the Board of Taxation, Chief Royal Secretary, and Second Deputy Minister of the Board of Punishments (senior second rank). These items were discovered in April 2000 during the relocation of a grave at the family burial ground of the Dojeonggong branch of the Seongju Yi clan, in Junggye-dong, Nowon-gu, Seoul. They comprise a total of twenty-four pieces of seven types: four jingnyeong (straight-collared robes), six dapho (sleeveless overcoats), four cheollik (robes with pleated skirts), one aekjureum (a robe with a gathered underarm), two jeoksam (unlined jackets), six pairs of trousers, and one myeongjeong (funeral banner). Because the identity of the tomb's occupant is clearly established, the clothing excavated from Yi Eon-chung's tomb serves as a benchmark for dating relics excavated from other tombs, and it is of great value for research into sixteenth-century costume history, textile history and the history of everyday customs. As costume material predating the Japanese invasions of the 1590s, excavated in the capital region, it is also material that can greatly contribute to research on the dress culture and funerary customs of senior officials in the Seoul area at the time. In addition, these items served as bogongui, clothes used to fill empty space inside the coffin; they are of many different kinds and were excavated in an almost perfectly preserved state, making them a valuable resource for costume research, allowing scholars to identify not only the form of the garments but also the weave, pattern and sewing technique of the textiles.
