Ullim House, Cheongdo
청도 운림고택 · 淸道 雲林古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krLocated at the centre of the village, this house consists of seven buildings: the women's quarters, the middle men's quarters, the large storehouse, the small storehouse, the large men's quarters, the family shrine, and the outer gate quarters. Passing through the outer gate quarters, which face south-west, one finds the large men's quarters facing south to the left, and to the right, set apart in its own enclosure, the family shrine; the middle men's quarters, facing the outer gate quarters, together with the women's quarters and two storehouses, forms the open square main house, arranged facing north-west. Characteristic features of the layout and spatial composition include the following: although the terrain would have allowed the main house to face south, it instead faces the architecturally unfavourable north-west; the large men's quarters is positioned so that the whole route of movement from the outer gate quarters to the middle men's quarters can be seen at a glance; and the women's quarters can be entered only through an inner gate in the left-hand bay of the middle men's quarters. This can be seen as an architectural expression of the owner's intentions: he was a naegwan, a court official serving the king, and the house reflects both his loyalty directed towards the palace, which lies to the north-west of Cheongdo, and a wish, stricter than in an ordinary yangban house, to avoid exposing the women's quarters, to control access, and to restrict the movement of women within the house. The house is of considerable importance, providing valuable information for research into the houses of naegwan. Note: This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but viewing may be restricted for personal reasons of the owner or others.
